The role of Executive Director leading the development of Place & Economy across both Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council has come about as the two councils work to share best practice, resources and improve financial efficiency for the taxpayer across this exciting area of the country.
This unique opportunity offers a chance to work within the economic powerhouse of Cambridgeshire – the fastest growing county in the UK - with its world renowned reputation for learning, life sciences, big pharma and new technological advances. Alongside Peterborough, the UKs 4th fastest growing City, multicultural and diverse with a growing population, a diverse economy, and excellent communications links countrywide.
The two areas already share much - innovative practices, ambition and a shared local government service at officer level which is the first and largest of its kind in the country.
The two councils are separate and distinct in approach – but united in their desire to solve some of the area’s most intractable issues. These include unlocking and spreading the undoubted economic potential of the area as a whole to benefit disadvantaged communities, housing affordability and connectivity between the two cities, market towns and rural communities.
We have worked together to secure devolution and a Combined Authority which has strategic responsibility for transport, infrastructure and housing. This post will play a significant role in delivering on this strategic direction including the development of the CamMetro, the CA’s biggest planned transport scheme, as well as contributing to the wider economy of the area via the CA’s business board.
Cambridgeshire benefits from an ambitious City Deal programme – the Greater Cambridge Partnership – where we work closely with city and district councils and Cambridge University to invest substantial capital in improving transport and cutting congestion.
This role is not just about keeping the Local Government show on the road, but innovating to improve the future of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and using commercial acumen to drive efficiency, income generation and to identify new funding streams to help deliver the area’s shared ambition.
